Kumari Kandam

Kumari Kandam as it is known in Tamil, but it is called as Lemuria by many scholars. Around 1850 the notion of lost Kumari came into prominence. In 1864, Phililp Sclater, an English Lawyer and a Zoologist (an expert in ornithology & zoogeography) was puzzled by the findings of a particular fossil in Madagascar and certain parts of India. But these fossils were never found in Africa or in the Middle East. These were the fossils of Lemur, a primate species of Prosimians and are generally considered as the forerunners of simians - a extremely long genetic pedigree. Today, Lemurs are found only on the island of Madagascar and surrounding islands taking the name from Latin. Lemur - Spirits of the Night. Philip Sclater formed the theory that a continent had existed stretching from India to Madagascar, without any connection to Africa. Thus the continent was named Lemuria after the lemur fossils. Philip Sclaters theory was accepted because it explained the dispersal of some creatures across Eastern parts of the world, only to reiterate the fact mentioned in Silapathikaram, by Tamilans 2000 years ago.
